System Requirements

Computer

  • Computer: Desktop or laptop (Windows, macOS, or Linux)
  • Operating System: Windows 10 or later, macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) or later
  • Processor: Intel i5 or equivalent; 4.2 GHz processor or higher
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM minimum (16 GB recommended). While an 8GB RAM system should be sufficient for most tasks, we recommend 16GB to facilitate multitasking and more demanding applications.
  • Monitor: Minimum resolution of 1024 x 768
  • Hard Drive/Storage: Solid State Drive (SSD) with at least 256GB of space
  • Graphics Card: Integrated or dedicated GPU with at least 2GB of VRAM

Note: Mobile devices, like cellphones and tablets, may be used to access and review courses; however, to complete some assignments, quizzes, and exams, a computer or laptop will be required.

Internet Requirements

  • Connection: Broadband internet connection
  • Speed: 10 Mbps recommended. Speeds below 10 Mbps may cause slower loading times for video-heavy courses.
  • Latency: Less than 150 ms
  • Mobile Devices: LTE or 5G service is sufficient for mobile devices for course browsing.

Peripherals

  • Headset: USB or 3.5mm jack headset with microphone for clear audio during live sessions
  • Microphone: High-quality built-in or external microphone for clear audio
  • Webcam: Built-in or external USB webcam for video conferencing and proctored exams
  • Scanner: A scanner may be useful in some courses

Browser

  • Supported Browsers: Google Chrome or Firefox are the recommended browsers. The latest versions of Microsoft Edge and Safari may have limited capabilities.
  • JavaScript: For some applications, JavaScript must be enabled.
  • Cookies: For some applications, like Copyleaks plagiarism and AI detection, cookies must be enabled.

Plugins/Applications

  • PDF Reader: Adobe Acrobat Reader DC or equivalent
  • Office Suite: Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or equivalent (Google Docs, OpenOffice). All students receive a Thomas Edison State University email account that provides free access to Google Workspace, which is a set of productivity tools created by Google that allows students to work independently or collaboratively in Docs, Sheets, Slides and other Google tools. Some course tools may require browser plugins or other software to be installed. More information is provided in those courses.
  • Kaltura MediaSpace: Kaltura MediaSpace is not compatible with Chromebooks, Macbook Air, and other laptop/tablets that do not have enough storage for programs.
  • Additional Applications: Some courses may require additional hardware or software. Details on these will be included in those specific courses.
